FRGMTed is an ongoing visual project exploring generation loss through analog video duplication. Using two VCRs and stacks of found tapes, footage is intentionally degraded through repeated copying — each pass introducing distortion, color bleed, and structural interference.

The project draws a parallel between media degradation and cultural transmission. As images are copied, they remain connected to their source while shifting in form — examining how identity, memory, and culture transform across generations, particularly within immigrant families where preservation and adaptation exist simultaneously.

FRGMTed treats loss not as erasure, but as transformation.

Design Approach

The process is materially simple: footage transferred from one VCR to another repeatedly. Each duplication introduces cumulative distortion — color drift, tracking errors, signal noise, structural collapse. Rather than correcting these artifacts, the system embraces them. The interference becomes the content.

Outcome

Select frames extracted as stills and translated across formats — large-scale exhibition prints, printed ephemera, trading cards, and publication spreads. The visual identity system mirrors the conceptual framework: modular, fragmented, built around repetition and variation. Each iteration remains traceable to its origin, reshaped by the context it passes through.
